It was pointed out to me that my latest article problematically defined transsexual women at one point as “biological males.” It’s a descriptor I’ve seen used so many times before — by trans and non-trans people alike — and so thought nothing of using it. Now that it’s been pointed out to me, though, I realize how inaccurate it is. I’ve replaced it with “people assigned as male at birth” — because biological sex is not always clear-cut or genitally-based.
I know this, of course! But it’s easy to unthinkingly use language that contradicts that. Another lesson learned.
